New blog!

Check out my new recent blog on a personal travel to India.

I lied….I did wait long

I know, it’s been again a long time. I’ve been debating, internally, on whether or not to come clean. I think I may feel better if I do, so here it is.

We are trying ADHD medication for my son!

Yikes! There you have it. As someone who considers themselve anti-drug therapy for kids with ADHD, we caved when the teach a few months ago advised us that he was going to fail grade 2. Out of sheer desperation, we decided to try concerta…among all of the other methods I might add.

And now?

Has a A- in math, and B’s in all other subjects. Is looking to finish reading 100 books before the end of the school year…he’s up to 78.

Oddly, I don’t feel better having come clean. Hopefully I can still consider myself ‘newage’, with all of my crystals, Reiki sessions, etc. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if I am ousted from the ‘enlightened’ community!

I can’t believe it’s been this long

I am embarrassed to see that it’s been so long since my last post. I am surprised to see that people are still reading my blog…after all of this time without any new updates.

It’s not that I haven’t thought about getting back to writing, it has simply been a busy time in my life. I would love to say that exciting things have happened during the absense…but no. Nothing overly exciting really to talk about.

Both of my sons are doing well. The youngest ( the challenging ADHD one) is doing much better in school. It’s almost as if a switch was turned on one day. My oldest son, 9 years old, was very sick during the xmas holidays and remained with a sore tummy for months after. In the past few weeks we have had him tested for everything, and my gut feeling is that he is Gluten intolerant. Doctors don’t like parental gut feelings, and we are dealing with trying to get to the bottom of the stomach aches.

There are a few anecdotes to share with you regarding my journey into the spiritual world. My sons keep me on my toes with that and my youngest son seems to force my eyes wide open to the possibilities of the universe.

I will share those with you in my next posts…cause they are worth sharing with the world, as seen through the eyes of a very open and spiritually connected 7 year-old.

Until then, thanks for being patient with me. I am making a promise to myself not to wait another 3 months until the next post.

peace and love,

It’s been a while

I realize it has been a long time since my last post…and I’ve probably lost my readers!

But for a while there, I had lost my MOJO temporarily…and now I’m on the mend! I’m in the midst of taking my third level of Reiki and it has re-centred me, and I’m starting to feel grounded again. It happens to all of us once in a while!

A lot has happened since my last post. I have had once again a meeting with the principal and teacher at my son’s school. I think they get the picture now. I’m my son’s advocate…his champion…and nothing will get in my way of me trying to get him the services that he needs in order to learn the traditional school subjects of the educational system. I believe they are important, it’s just how to teach them that should vary. But alas, it doesn’t. Not yet.

Brain Food.

In my research regarding treating ADHD naturally, the same theme always seems to stand out…nutrition.  I am not a doctor or a naturopath, I am a parent. Even better, I am an observant parent. Without having read too much on varying affects of foods on ADHD children I can tell you without a doubt that sugar, chocolate and dairy, all have a significant impact on the behaviour of my son. I can also tell you that having my yougnest take OMEGA oils each day, has had a similar impact on him as his previous ADHD medication did. Continue reading

‘The’ meeting with the school

As I mentioned in a previous blog, I anticipated a call shortly after school started regarding my ‘adhd’ son. Then one day last week, the call came. The school wanted to meet with us to discuss how to ‘meet his educational needs’. So off we went, both my husband and I, to meet with the teacher, the principal and a resource worker…all in a small back room, to discuss my son.

The Power of Affirmations

My youngest son came home from school the other day and said to me,

“I told the class I was ADHD today during circle time.”

Really? What did you say that meant?

” I told them I was retarded.”

Yikes. Break my heart. I have now realized that despite all of the efforts to convey to my son that is a good boy, that sometimes acts too quickly without thinking first…he now identifies himself as ADHD. Further to that, he identifies himself as ‘retarded’ because of it.

Of course he would think that something is ‘wrong’ with him…after numerous visits to the psychologist, numerous ‘tests’, and a special ‘rewards’ program at school, he would catch on that he is not the same as everyone else in his class.

Since that day, I have been on a mission. A mission to instill in my son a sense of pride for who he is and a belief that he can achieve anything and become anything that he wants. ADHD is not a deficiency! It is a simply a different way of learning, observing and reacting to things.  And from ‘different’ I mean different from status quo or from societal and educational expectations.

I firmly believe that once a child’s self-esteem is affected, your job as a parent to help your child reach his full potential becomes extremely difficult.

Where is dad in all of this?

Someone asked me the other day where my hubby stood in regards to my new age approach to parenting. I have to say, that I married a sweet man, however he is most possibly the most negative person that I know. When I first started talking about Reiki the conversations went mostly like this:

‘I went to Chapters today and I bought my Reiki manual.”

“Your what? Your Ranki manual?”

“Reiki, honey, REE-KEE!”

“Oh, how much did this Reker manual cost?”

“Whatever, how much did it cost?”

How to explain Reiki to Children

In my last post I mentioned how wonderful I believe Reiki is on ADHD children, and children in general. However, my being able to practise Reiki on my children wasn’t always so easy. The first step was explaining Reiki to my young sons.

So how to you explain Reiki to young children? Well, I am not the ultimate authority on that, or anything else for that matter, but I can share with you my experience. I spent days trying to figure out how to explain Reiki to my children. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that my youngest son explained it for me…in one word.

Energy Work & Reiki – the effects on ADHD

My previous post dealt with my preparations in anticipation for dealings with my son’s school and teacher. This is ongoing…and we haven’t met yet. (Trust me, you’ll hear all about it).

In this post however, I want to tell you about my experiences using Reiki on my ADHD/Oppositional son. ( I have to reiterate that the only reason I use the term ADHD and Oppositional is as a point of reference for those who do not yet know my stance on the issue…if it were up to me, I’d call it something else).

Back to Reiki. So what is Reiki? Google Reiki and see what you get. It comes back with over 22 million references to the word. Reiki is not as foreign or uncommon as what I had initially thought either. It turns out, that it’s just not talked about that much in general circles (or my own personal circles I guess).
