How to explain Reiki to Children

In my last post I mentioned how wonderful I believe Reiki is on ADHD children, and children in general. However, my being able to practise Reiki on my children wasn’t always so easy. The first step was explaining Reiki to my young sons.

So how to you explain Reiki to young children? Well, I am not the ultimate authority on that, or anything else for that matter, but I can share with you my experience. I spent days trying to figure out how to explain Reiki to my children. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that my youngest son explained it for me…in one word.

The evening of my first Reiki class didn’t go unnoticed. It is not often that I am not home for dinner and bedtime with the boys, and this evening they noticed my absence. The morning after my class, my oldest asked me if I had worked late.

‘No I didn’t work late, I took a class. ‘

‘A class for what?’ he asked.

I had no idea what to say, so I took a stab at it. ‘I took a class from a very wise woman who showed me how to use my hands to help people who might be sad, or sick.’

‘Really? Cool! Can you try it on me?’

‘Sure’ I said. And so he lay in his bead, and I practised.

Over the following weeks and months, both of my boys received Reiki (see my previous blog entry).

However, one evening, after a short Reiki session with my youngest , I noticed something that I had never noticed before. Right after I was done, he stood up and gave me an enormous hug and said thank you. I realized at that moment that he had done this after every single session. So I decided to ask.

‘What are you saying thank you for?’ I ask, intrigued.

‘For sending me love.’ he said.

I was overwhelmed. Never had I thought of explaining Reiki as having anything to do with love. Of course it does! It’s all about love and light and sending that to the person you are working on. That’s exactly what I do as a Reiki practionner, I send light and love!

‘That’s exactly what I do’. I said back to him.

‘I know mommy, I can feel it.’ he said squeezing me harder.
